One of our team recently worked on a large utility meter reading application. Although a small number of real meters were available for system testing, there were not enough to provide a population for load and stress testing. Another issue was that real meters could not be made to reliably exhibit faulting behaviours to order (e.g. spiked meter reads and intermittent comms failures).
The consulant created an application to host multiple mock meters, that could provide hundreds of meters with numerous normal and faulting behaviours. This rich testing platform enabled numerous bugs to be flushed out of the system, which might not have been detected with normal system testing.
This piece required the correct simulation of Serial Port, Modem and Electricity Meter protocols and was delivered in less than a month.
